Zoom can be used on a laptop, computer, smartphone, even a tablet. Using Zoom on a Tablet offers incredible features, including a whiteboard feature, that could really benefit students and faculty who are interested in STEM, drawing, brainstorming, among others.

The whiteboard feature on Zoom could allow students and faculty to meet and communicate to each other specific equations, ideas, brainstorming trees, etc.

There are two ways to take advantage of this whiteboard feature on Zoom.

1. Using Zoom on a Tablet, sharing screen, and selecting the Whiteboard feature.
  • Make sure you are active on a Zoom meeting through your tablet
  • In the top menu bar, select on ‘Share Content‘ in the upper right corner
  • Select the last option on the drop down menu: ‘Whiteboard
  • A blank screen will appear. This is your whiteboard and is now being shared to all participants in the meeting instead of your video screen
  • Here, you can draw equations, doodles, idea maps, etc. and all participants will be able to view this live
  • When you wish to end the whiteboard session, simply select ‘Stop Share‘ at the upper right corner of the screen

The following video demonstrates the features that can be used when using the Whiteboard feature on an iPad.

2. Using Zoom on a laptop, sharing the tablet’s screen, and using a Whiteboard app of your choice
  • Click on “Share Screen” and select either “iPhone/iPad via AirPlay” or “iPhone/iPad via Cable“. The latter option seems to be more reliable in most cases, so consider using that one.
  • Once you start sharing the screen of your tablet, open an app that provides some version of whiteboard. Among the many such apps you can use “ShowMe” app.
  • Similarly to Zoom’s Whiteboard, you can draw, map, doodle anything that is needed for the course that the participants will be able to see
  • When you wish to end the whiteboard session, simply select ‘Stop Share‘ at the upper right corner of the screen
