Common Questions

  • Adding Sections

In the newest version of Moodle (3.3), sections are not automatically added when a course is created. However, if you are importing material from an old course, you now do not need to worry about adding sections to the new course before performing the import. If you are building a new course, you will need to add new sections to correspond with each week or topic in your course. The examples in this post are for Weekly Format courses. The same procedure can be followed for Topic Format courses, but the button labels will refer to “+Add Topics” rather than “+Add Weeks.” To change the layout of your course from…

  • Create an Assignment

First, make sure editing has been turned on in the course, as described in the “Editing a Course” post.  Go to the course section (week or topic) where you want to create an assignment.  From the “+Add an activity or resource” link, choose Assignment under Activities.  Then click the “Add” button at the bottom of the pop-up window.  You will then be working within the Adding a new Assignment window.   In the ‘General’ section, enter the Assignment name and description (these fields are required).  Under the ‘Grade’ section, assign the number of points (or no grade) for the assignment, along with the grading method (direct grading, marking guide or rubric). …

  • Adding a Forum/Discussion Board to your course

To create a forum, make sure editing is turned on, and click the “+Add an activity or resource” button located at the bottom right of each week/topic then select forum from the list. You can select a forum type by expanding the “Forum Type” drop down menu in the General section. The default is “Standard Forum for General Use,” and that works for most scenarios. The Q and A forum type can also be useful. There are a few key differences between this forum and the standard forum. In a Q and A forum, the instructor must post a question first, and then in order to see their fellow classmates’ responses, students…

  • What can students or my TA see and do in Moodle?

You can easily switch views to see what students, TAs and other types of participants see in your Moodle course. Once any course is visible to students, you can check visibility permissions under the “Administration” box. You can check what your students and TAs can see with their role when you use the “Check permissions” option, under “Users” and “Permissions”. Then, you can simply select a specific user and choose the “Show this user’s permissions” option to view their roles and permissions.

  • Gradebook Weighting

The Moodle gradebook offers quite a bit of flexibility in setting up your grading method. There are numerous ways you can aggregate grades such as Simple weighted mean of grades, Weighted mean of grades, and natural. The most common aggregation method is weighted mean of grades. Using this method you can determine how much weight to give each item and/or category. The default is Simple weighted mean of grades which determines the weight of each item based on its maximum allowable points. One of the most common grading methods is Weighted means of grades. Use this method if you would like to setup your gradebook in a way that gives…
